Hazel Mezo is currently finishing her BA (Hons) in Fashion Design and Garment Construction at Carmarthen School of Art in West Wales.
Her Graduate collection, ‘Yours, In Solidarity’, takes inspiration from the miners of the Dulais and Swansea Valleys during the strike of 84’/85, and the group ‘Lesbians and Gay Men Support the Miners’. The clash of lifestyles, cultures, and the resulting solidarity shown between the two groups; as well as the political implications of the time, informs the serious, yet fun and uplifting mood of the collection. The Shape and detail of
the garments have been inspired by contextual images from the events that took place, as well as objects such as Mining lodge banners. Subtle symbolism runs throughout the collection.
Hazel is interested in the social history of working people and the stories behind them. Through thorough research she translates these stories into modern garments and is especially interested in detail. Hazel is currently based in West Wales.
